Welcome!

Welcome to Nuniwarmiut School! We are a collaborative learning community that is focused on student learning. Ours is a small school, 50 students preK-12, in Mekoryuk, Alaska. We are part of a large school district, Lower Kuskokwim School District. Our population is 100% Alaska Native and we live on Nunivak Island, 30 miles off the west coast of Alaska in the Bering Sea.

We are developing a Dual Language Enrichment model. The elementary students are split into two groups (K-2 and 3-5) during their day. One half of their day is spent with their English teacher and the other half with their Cugtun teacher. Their English instruction is in the content areas of Math and English Language Arts. Their Cugtun instruction is in the content areas of Cugtun Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. The content and vocabulary is then transferred during bilingual center times.

There are two secondary teachers who share the teaching load for the Junior High School (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12). Our secondary students also enjoy a Cugtun Language Arts class each day. Our high school is structured so that all of the students meet all their graduation requirements right here at Nuniwarmiut School.

Our Mission Statement

Nuniwarmiut School is a supportive, healthy and bi-culturally connected community working together to provide our students with high quality academic preparation to reach their desired higher education. We teach the importance of success, respect and independence through Cup'ig and English cultural values, traditions and biliteracy.
