Welcome to Nuniwarmiut School! We are a small school with approximately 50 students in Mekoryuk, Alaska. Our students receive instruction in grades PreK-12. Our student population is comprised entirely of Alaska Natives. Our school is on Nunivak Island, 30 miles off the Alaskan coast in the Bering Sea.
Elementary students are divided into two groups (K-2 and 3-5), spending half their day with an English teacher focused on math and English Language Arts, and the other half with a Cugtun teacher covering Cugtun Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Bilingual center times help transfer the content and vocabulary.
For secondary education, three teachers share the teaching load for Junior High (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12). Junior High and High School students attend a daily Cugtun Language Arts class. Students can meet all graduation requirements at Nuniwarmiut School.
